District Attorney Hopeful Mario Trujillo Honored - Trutanich Crashes the Party

Deputy District Attorney Mario Trujillo picked up the prestigious
Attorney of the Year award at the SEDBA Awards Dinner
Deputy District Attorney Mario Trujillo's candidacy for District Attorney in the 2012 elections received a major boost last night when he was presented with the Attorney of the Year award by the South East District Bar Association.

District Attorney Steve Cooley presented Trujillo with SEDBA's award, but not before bringing the house down with a few side-splitting remarks, like "Is there anyone here who is not running for District Attorney?" and in what was, perhaps, a jab at party-crashing Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich (see below)  Cooley noted Trujillo has "... the support of the entire South-East of Los Angeles, Trutanich only has San Pedro!"

Humor aside,  Cooley genuinely expressed thanks and acknowledgment for Trujillo's career-long dedication to upholding the finest traditions of the DA's Office and setting an example to others. It was definitely Trujillo's night, and to say that the audience were enthusiastic as praise upon praise was heaped upon Trujillo, would be an understatement.

TRUTANICH TRIES TO STEAL THE SHOW
If there was a dark moment to an otherwise joyous evening, it came when Cooley was just about to present Trujillo with his award; to the shock of the audience City Attorney Carmen Trutanich interrupted the proceedings.

"I love you man!" Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich was a surprise visitor at
the awards dinner, but nevertheless made sure everyone knew he was there, and why.

"Wait! Wait! Wait!" screamed Trutanich as he forged his way to the podium and grabbed center stage. Trutanich, who had arrived at the awards dinner late and was not listed as a speaker, had been confined to a table in the far corner of the room as the capacity crowd were already seated. He had been observed craning his neck around the room, perhaps looking for a better seating position.

Suddenly Trutanich was on his feet armed with an fistful of calligraphic scrolls, and was not going to be stopped. In what appeared to many as something of a "Kayne West - Taylor Swift" moment, Trutanich proceeded to give his own impromptu speech recognizing the achievements of not only Mario Trujillo, but the other honorees who had not yet even been introduced.

Judging by reports of the audience's reaction, this was not a welcome interruption, and Trutanich's excuse that he had interrupt because he had leave early to catch a plane to DC, was singularly unimpressive. He could have been flying to Idaho for all anyone seemed to care, "and the sooner the better" was how one of the guests summed up this fiasco.

As Trutanich left the room, perhaps DC bound, perhaps not, few had any doubts as to Trutanich's true motive, and if he had previously enjoyed the support of the South East District Bar Association, those days now appear to be over.

CHARACTER COUNTS
If anyone had any doubts as to whether Trujillo has what it takes to run a viable campaign for District Attorney, Trujillo, former President of the Mexican American Bar Association, delivered an acceptance speech that had the audience eating out of the palms of his hands. In marked contrast to the disgraced City Attorney, Trujillo spoke respectfully, intelligently, and with a gravitas that suggests that Trujillo has what it takes to be a real leader and real contender. Notably, Trujillo had the grace not to even mention Trutanich's side show.

This was, in every sense, Mario Trujillo's night. The momentum he now has will probably never be greater, and many now expect Trujillo to parlay the support that he now undoubtedly has into a robust, thoughtful and effective campaign to be the next District Attorney of Los Angeles County.

Congratulations Mario! You were the hero of the night and we loved your speech. You really deserved this award for the things you have done to make our community safer.

You also showed a lot of class in ignoring that childish, stupid interruption from City Attorney Trutanich. It's the ability to make judgment calls like that, that shows us that you have what it takes to be a great District Attorney. Go Mario!

Oh, boo hoo. Poor D.A's had their little jerk fest interrupted by someone who brought them some awards.

No one cares about Mario Trujillo. If he's even able to raise 10 cents, he'll get less votes than the low class cockney brit got when he ran for City Attorney.

Cooley backs Jackie Lacey, and is letting anyone who'll listen that the rest of you guys are clowns.

Like 8:27 says, you people don't know how lucky you are that Mr. Trutanich took time out of his busy schedule to honor you. It was a disgrace that he was not given a speaking roll, and he showed the kind of guts and leadership that has made him the most powerful and popular elected official in Los Angeles, if not the USA. The fact that he has important business in Washington DC should tell you that Mr. Trutanich is a very important dignitary and should have been given the VIP treatment, instead of being treated like an uninvited guest.

The news is reporting that Trutanich is meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder.

I doubt Mario Trujillo could get past the receptionist at the Department of Justice.

"The news is reporting that Trutanich is meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder." Is that in response to a subpoena?

Anonymous said...

IF Trutanich really is meeting Attorney General Eric Holder, let's hope Holder does a little homework into Trutanich. Of course, I'm assuming Trutanich has some legitimate City business to discuss with Holder, and that he's not there trying to broker some deal for New York crime bosses who were arrested by the Feds last week.

Mario, ignore the BS about Trutanich - you saw for yourself the amount of real support that there is for you. You owe it to yourself and Los Angeles to enter the race. You can always honor your promise not to run against Steve Cooley if he decides to run, but unless good candidates like you start getting serious, Cooley will probably have to run, and I think he deserves a break after serving 3 terms. You need to show him you are serious and can run the strong campaign we all know you can do. You will also be surprised that there really is support for you, so my friend it's time to ____ or get off the pot.

Wait. A Latino Bar association gave an award to a Latino Lawyer? What's next, The Chinese Prosecutors giving an award to a Chinese Lawyer?

I was there. Cooley was drunk. He sometimes doesn't know what he's talking about after he's had a few.

For a minute, we thought he was going to declare victory in the AG's race again.

His remarks about Mario were hysterical.

Windscale:

On January 16 you wrote "Trutanich has achieved remarkable, if sometimes controversial, success in rebuilding the City Attorneys Office into an effective, accountable and efficient agency. Although some accuse Trutanich of being a micro-manager and somewhat overbearing in forcing the City Attorney's Office to adopt his policies, there is no question that his "My way or the highway" approach has weeded out weakness in the Office."

By January 25 you had started referring to Trutanich as "Carmen the Clown" and quoting the "Tru is False" blog, whose sole purpose is to bash Trutanich.

Would you care to expound on what prompted you to change your views of the City Attorney?

Berger was promised a promotion by Mario and a few extra oral goodies.

Trujillo is a moron. He lost the Janice Hahn race, and Measure B. His name is the kiss of death.

Phil Jennerjahn has more supporters.

Anonymous said...

7:52PM, I'll give you an opportunity to apologize. The Trujillo you are referring to is MICHAEL Trujillo - one of the Mayor's staffers who also runs campaigns - usually into the ground, you noted.

MARIO Trujillo is a Deputy District Attorney who has no connection whatsoever. Now, apologize to MARIO.

This blog has some kind sentiments for Mario, but right now he has too many issues in his closet to mount a serious campaign.

There's no glory in running a Steve Ipsen effort.

The smart money will stay on the sidelines til Steve Cooley decides what he's going to do this Fall.

7:38pm - Go back further than January and you'll find this blog was an ardent Trutanich supporter, siding with him on every issue. I too would like to hear from Windscale to find out why the sudden volte face?

BTW, "Mulholland Terrace," who used to blog at Griffith Park Wayist, was the first to call Trutanich a Clown. He now does the same thing at http://street-hassle.blogspot.com.

I think the reason Windscale has gone against Trutanich is pretty obvious. Just look at the comments posted here by Trutanich supporters; racist, personally abusive and hugely disrespectful. I think that says it all.

The TRU is FALSE blog has some pretty heavy criticism of Trutanich, and although it does not pretend to be anything but anti-Trutanich, the allegations they make appear to be supported by facts. All of this put together and it's not hard to see why a person would have a different view of Trutanich, once they know the truth.

It is interesting to see that not one single comment here from the Trutanich supporters questions the accuracy of Windscale's report of Trutanich's behavior at the awards dinner. Perhaps they too are ashamed to see the man they believed in behaving like the gutter politician he claimed not to be.

TRU is FALSE is right, Trutanich cannot be trusted.

I would like to see a real campaign with real candidates, and Lacey, Jackson and Trujillo seem to be the best of the crop.

Thank you, David Berger.

Of course Cooley is praising Trujillo. We can expect more of it. Trujillo knows too much and Cooley needs to keep him quiet. But, victims of crime are paying attention to this race and we will NOT tolerate dishonesty and lies in order to gain our vote. Cooley will back Lacey and Trujillo in order to hide his skeletons. Read the real story about Trujillo's close connection with Cooley here.

Lacey and Trujillo are both anti union. In L.A. that doesn't work.
They're both doomed.

8:11am "Lacey and Trujillo are both anti union. Really? I suppose the 700 other deputy DAs who don't want to join the so-called DA's union are also "anti-labor:?

Or could it be that Lacey, Trujillo and the 700 other deputy DAs just don't want to be forced to join a DAs union lead by someone who regards a twice convicted sex-offender as "one of my closest friends"? Neither do they much like the appointed replacement who had an embarrassing little incident over a porno sex tape featuring himself and his wife? These are the types of creeps who have hijacked the union, and nobody wants anything to do with them. Just like Mubarak in Egypt, they refuse to hold free elections, and do everything on the down low, so no one knows who gets elected to what until after the event. In the last rigged election where ballots were not sent to all 'members' Steve Ipsen failed to win a seat on the board. Guess what, they went ahead and appointed him to a vacant position anyway.
Anti-Labor? No. Pro-Democracy Yes.

I don't agree with your assessment.

First, there have been few pro-Trutanich comments on this blog and I couldn't find any that were racist or abusive.

Second, anyone who changes their mind about anyhing after reading anonymous comments on a blog is a fool, and I don't think Windscale is a fool.

Third, anyone who changes their mind about something after reading only an unabashedly biased blog like Tru is False is a fool, and, again, I don't think Windscale is a fool.

There's more to Windscale's change of heart. I'd prefer to read it from the horse's hoof - only a fool would depend on anonymous comments on a blog.

10:23am you don't think "Wait. A Latino Bar association gave an award to a Latino Lawyer? What's next, The Chinese Prosecutors giving an award to a Chinese Lawyer?" is racist?

No wonder you cannot fathom why decent people do not wish to be associated with Trutanich supporters.

8:11am - is a serial blogger who keeps trying to perpetuate lies and has a person dislike for the union that had over 700 members until Cooley and his management team started engaging in illegal activity. Cooley is going down in federal court along with Lacey and Trujillo. Serial blogger is one of Cooley's minons whos record in trial probably squeaks like a mouse compared to most. Victims will get out the truth and are tired of the internal corruption and we plan to expose it.

As I said before, only a fool would make a judgment based on anonymous comments on a blog. I still want to hear Windscale's perspective.

9:19 AM - 700 Deputy DA's aren't running for public office. (although sometimes it seems like they are) Lacey and Trujillo are in the race so far.

Their anti union, anti labor positions will be a death knell for both of their campaigns.

And the stupid defensive comments from their one or two cyber trolls will not change this fact.

Anonymous said...

Notice how the "anti-labor" and "anti-union" thing keeps popping up, without explaining that it's a FACT that the vast majority of deputy DAs do not want to have anything to do with a so-called union run by a bunch of malcontents? Neither do they want to be FORCED to have $948 a year deducted from their salaries in "dues" that the malcontents will waste on filling more lawsuits to silence any criticism. Notice the veiled threat in 1:03pm's comment.
The ugly truth is that all 1,000 deputy DAs would like a union that was not being manipulated to serve the personal vendettas of a bunch of morons who complain about anything and everything at the drop of a hat. While most of the 1,000 deputy DAs go to their assignments throughout the 59 offices spread over the 4,061 square miles of LA County, this union of ten or twelve complain bitterly that their assignment is "too far" (albeit within the set rule) and beneath their abilities, because they are all so very, very special.
Let's be clear, it's the leadership of the union that's the problem, not the concept of the union itself. It's the kafkaesque way the current leadership meets in secret, holds elections without telling members, and then makes appointments without reference to members, that nobody wants to be a part of.
If you think you are making any headway by labeling anyone who opposes the leadership of this union as "anti-labor" or "anti-union" then, please continue to do all the things that make you so very repellant to everyone else. Your personal attacks merely succeed in making the point of that you are a bunch of truly unrepresentative and unworthy bunch of lowlifes.
Maybe you should hook up with Trutanich and have him "investigate" all those who don't agree with you to see if there are any 'criminal aspects" to this?

Anonymous said...

I know you are, but what am I?

Anonymous said...

The DA's Union lost all credibility (and any support from Deputy DAs) when they "endorsed" a tea party nut job for Attorney General just to insult Steve Cooley. I wonder how that fact sits with the "anti-labor" and "anti-union" thing? Last time I checked, Mr. John Eastman was not exactly a pro-union sort of guy.

Although this entire union thing really is off topic, I'm glad the issues are being aired. Of course, that's the last thing the DA Union leaders want, they much prefer to have their secret meetings so they can claim to have the right to speak for everyone - the "victims" as 1:03pm put it, so let's hear the DA Union position on endorsing an extreme right wing republican for AG?

Oh, I know, it's a little difficult for you to explain that, so why don't you just resort to a few more personal insults, threats and name calling. That's about all you've got.

This is the most childish blog I've ever read. Name calling. Ass-kissing. Idiots fighting over candidates who haven't declared yet. No one uses their own name.

I was at the dinner on Saturday night and observed Trutanich's boorish behavior-- although by that time, the night had wore on so long that I was not awake enough to realize it was a Kanye moment. Anyhoo, now I'm sitting here reading all these comments, ostensibly from DAs, who are commenting on this blog ALL DAY LONG, on the taxpayers dime, rather than working. Get back to work!

Jackie Lacey better keep a snickers bar with her when she takes the stand in federal court. She is going to need it. Cooley will need more than a snickers. Unfortunately, his good looks and charismatic speech will might be too articulate for the jury. Maybe he will use four letter words on the stand, I really can't wait for his impulses to take over. He might need a water bottle full of vodka to calm his nerves during cross examination. Just sayin...

Do you know his upbringing and the hard work and sacrifices he and his family have made. Further he is an awesome father! He should be commended for being a great leader, something that LA needs! I am not staff I am a well respected appointed official.

To be honest, Trutanich doesn't have San Pedro. Maybe a certain specific group of traditional supporter type that he shares a special history with. But I highly doubt he has the other half of P'dro. The half he works so hard to abuse. He certainly is a racist.
