LA Times wraps up DA candidate reviews ahead of endorsement Sunday

UPDATED: Sunday, May 13, 2012 5:30AM
LA Times endorses Jackie Lacey for District Attorney
Daily News says 'ABC' Anyone But Carmen

District Attorney candidates Alan Jackson and Bobby Grace were reviewed by the LA Times earlier this week, and the Times wrapped up their reviews of the remaining three starting Friday morning with Chief Deputy District Attorney Jackie Lacey.

Lacey's review, headlined 'D.A. candidate Jackie Lacey looks to move up,' highlights Lacey's experience as a senior manager in the DA's Office who was recently promoted to the number two position of Chief Deputy carrying DA Steve Cooley's endorsement as his first choice for successor. 'Lacey looks and acts like the adult in the room' the Times said, noting that like Cooley, 'she has a low-key personality' and 'exhibits a certain gravitas.'

High praise indeed from the Times and judging by the length and depth of their review of Lacey, they've set up a all the justification they need for endorsing her candidacy tomorrow, as has been widely rumored.

Friday afternoon saw the Times review Danette Meyers, headlined 'D.A.'s race: Danette Meyers wants the job.' The piece highlighted the frustrations faced by a candidate in a county wide election where, in the absence of a significant campaign warchest, it is hard to get the message out to voters. But if Meyers lacks the warchests of Lacey, Jackson or Trutanich, she has scored well with partisan endorsements and social media.

Overall the Times gave Meyers as good a review as she could have hopped for, and while observers say the she will turn those endorsements into party-line votes, her lack of funding could harm her chances among the uniformed voters.

On Saturday morning the Times finished its review of the candidates with 'What's the deal with D.A. candidate Carmen Trutanich?' Although the answer to that question is a simple one; Trutanich is a liar who will say anything to be elected and follow through with nothing, the Times spent a considerable amount of ink dissecting his campaign and character.

The editorial board were less than impressed with Trutanich's 'Blueprint for Justice,' noting that it contained numerous errors such as 'establishing a Public Integrity Division' in the DA's Office when there has been one since 2000 when DA Steve Cooley established it. But while Trutanich apparently thinks voters are too stupid to check facts like that, the Times was not.

The devil is in the details with a slippery customer like Trutanich and the Times picked up on the fact that he plans to use his version of PID  for 'ongoing investigations in protection of potential abuses committed by public employees.' Significantly, there is no mention of prosecution. A typo perhaps? A mere detail that slipped the attention of the man the Times called a 'goofy but dangerous loose cannon, power-hungry crazy man.'? Apparently not.

Trutanich's brief tenure as City Attorney has seen him use the 'McCarthy Method' on numerous occasions - using the media to make threats and launch investigations, but with no follow through prosecution. The fact that Trutanich states he will use his PID for the 'protection of potential abuses,' is a clear sign that Trutanich still favors the McCarthy Method. It is not hard to imagine weekly headlines about Grand Jury investigations into 'potential abuses' from a Trutanich administration as part of his plan to bunny hop to the Attorney General's Office at the earliest opportunity.

Overall the Times gave Trutanich a respectfully deprecating review. He will not be rushing to the newsstand tomorrow to find out which of the candidates has secured the Times endorsement. It won't be him. If he ever was a contender for the Times seal of approval, his recent antics sealed that fate. Thursday's LA Times exclusive exposed Trutanich lying about being a victim of crime. It was just the latest of a number of disturbing truths about a man who is unfit for the office of District Attorney. That's the deal with Trutanich.

Does anyone have a statistic on the number of dumb people that vote? Trutanich is banking on his theory that the majority of voters that go to the polls are dumb and uniformed. Anyone with half a brain would see how unfit this guys is for office. Basically, with all that has been in the press you'd have to live under a rock to vote for Carmen to Clown. Do rock dwellers go to the polls???

Alan Jackson is by FAR the most qualified candidate to serve as D. A. He understands the problems facing LA County and knows how to solve them. His will provide outstanding leadership in this office - - he is smart, articulate, dedicated and understands what it takes to get criminals off the streets.

Just heard that the Times is going to endorse Lacey and the Daily News will endorse Jackson. Nuch is screwed. The lie about gangmembers shooting him was the last straw. If Nuch makes it to the run off he's firing Shallman and hiring Ace Smith. It seems Shallman didn't know how much of a lie gang shooting thing was, and Nuch was hazy enough for Shallman to build the campaign around it. Nuch's only hope is to dump Shallman.

Does anyone at the city attornet's office know where Bell works?

Rumor is.....Nuch will win this election regardless if Times or Daily news endorse him. Looks like the oposition have used last cheap shot on Nuch yesterday with gangshooting story and suposodly hazy details about it. Its time for Nuch to put the hamerr down now. Watch out next few weeks u gona learn a lot what happens when u mess with Big Tuna.

Lacey getting the Times endorsement is not going to mean she wins the election. What it does mean is that it totally spoils Trutanich's hopes to win the primary election outright. Between Lacey and Jackson, statistically Trutanich cannot get 50% plus one to win on June 5. The real question is whether, with the democrat slate divided between Lacey, Meyers and Grace, anyone of them will be able to match Jackson's solid republican base. After June 5, Jackson or Lacey will destroy Trutanich. The big Tuna is toast.

If Nuch doesn't win the primary, he is finished and he knows it. He's been busy dialing for dollars, but he's screwed himself with so many people that they're not returning his calls. SIEU promised him a $500k IE, but that's not looking like happening now that the lie about being shot at came out. Word is they will still make the IE but only after the primary. Pretty much everyone else is taking the same approach, they want to see where Nuch ends up after the primary. That's why he's screaming like a scalded cat right now.

You were right. The LA Times endorsed Lacey, but the Daily News said ABC -Anyone But Carmen Trutanich! They're endorsing both Lacey and Jackson.

Holly Crap!!! Daily News is devastating for Nuch. They call him a liar and cheat. Times said the same thing, but not so directly. It is so over for Nuch that he is now worried that even if he makes it to the rumoff, he will lose to Lacey and that also means the end of his career at the City Attorney's office.

His only hope is to see if he can get hooked up with the Obama administration and land a spot as ambassador to Croatia. That would allow him to withdraw from the DA race before being politically destroyed. He is a very worried man. The Big Tuna is looking like a small squib, curled up in the fetal position wondering how it could all have gone so horribly wrong.

Congratulations to Jackie Lacey for winning the LA Times and Daily News endorsements. You had us worried for a while, but now that you've got these two powerful endorsements in your pocket, there is nothing to stop you becoming LA's first female DA and the first African American DA. You have the experience and attitude that counts and the support of everyone at the DA's Office. Jackie Lacey for DA!

Best news I've heard all year is that around 2 million people in LA got to read the truth about Carmen Trutanich. The one-time Peoples Lawyer is now the Politician's Liar. Game over.

I am sick of your email blasts and twitter comments. Go get a life Mr. Dragnet, Trutanich will be your boss next year, so you better trade in your Bently for Prius, gas is going to be even more expensive next year.

These endorsements for Jackie are HUGE!!! These same publications endorsements helped Steve Cooley become our next Attorney General.

Alan Jackson and Danette are finished. Stick a fork in them.

Dragnet, Your chatter in the commentaries was that Lacey's union and labor issues were going to prevent her from getting any endorsements. She got both major papers. What happened?

Nuch still got most money, most endorsments, unions, sherrif departament, governor and the most ability to run DA office. Let's face it citty att office is ten times more functional then previous under Rocky. Mr.Cooleyy was a good DA...Big tuna is gona be a great one. Miss Jackson is a nice lady but she can't compete with voter support of Nuch. And Alan Jackson don't have any money. Comon let's be real. Big Tuna is still a front runner. Looks like they r scared he was gona take it in June so they r scrambling. I respect all the candidates but Nuch will win now or later on.

I guess the Big Tuna got himself filleted by the LA Times and the Daily News. Big Tuna, not so much anymore.

it wasn't good....I am sure he was not happy about it but u know what.....while everybody is takin shots at him he's taking it like a gentelmen and doing his job as city att and winning lawsuits and money for the city. Why don't u write about big settelment city att office won against pharmacy. He hasn't said one bad thing about oposition. Big Tuna will prevail because his friends and the public have his back. Don't forget there is 200 000 Croatians in LA and each one of them will vote. Also Nuch has huge support in Armenian community and they will vote for him because there is no Armenian candidated running. The rest of population only 10 percent votes and he's got 800 000 union support. People have already make they mind up who they gona vote for regardless of all the negative press. Sorry guys croatian will be next DA

Just filled out my absentee ballot for Jackie! I had been waiting to see if the Times would endorse Alan or Jackie. I thought it was a foregone conclusion Nuch would make it to a run off so I wanted to vote for whoever would have the best shot at beating Nuch in November. However now with Nuch lying about getting shot out by gang members and Nuch getting his butt kicked by today's Times and Daily News it looks like Nuch may not even make it to a run off.

Poor Mario must feel pretty foolish right now. Guess he's not getting that Chief Deputy spot under Trutanich after all. Don't feel bad Mario, Trutanich never intended to follow through on that promise anyway.

Hey @6:44PM everybody takin shots at the Big Tuna? Gimme a break. The whole point is that nobody took shots at the Big Tuna in 1985, the whole thing is a big lie. It is a disgrace. Nobody like a lying cop. The Big Tuna and his investigator sure sound like a pair of liars. Finito my friend, game over. The Big Tuna will be leaving the house on June 6.

Remember cooley was endorsed by the Times for AG and lost. The LATIMES means nothing. Berger your day will come.

How do u know who took shoots or didnt? Were u there in Green Meadows park? Where is his personel file? Why is it missing and who made sure of that? Why nobody said anything back then when he was runinng for city job? Maybe Jackie used it to drain the the bacon fat when she made breakfast for Mr. Cooley. I don't know...maybe Kamala will find out and let the public know what the real truth is. Let's talk about facts and not heorshe say. Its funny the file that's missing is suposed to be located in DA office and the underboss of that office miss Jackie is running against Nuch. These r the facts not heror she says. If u gona make alegations against the Big Tuna at least have proof. Yeah he didn't honor to pledge but Jack weiss never accepted the chalenge, yes he hired marketing firm to help promote his campaigne video and video went viral, these r the facts.

BREAKING NEWS! Dragnet reporter Joe Friday was surrounded by members of the Trutanich campaign in Hancock Park today. Friday was interviewing a key witness in the investigation into the real reason why Trutanich quit the DA's Office when he was shot at repeatedly. Thankfully, the shots missed even though the Trutanich thugs had Friday surrounded. By a very convenient coincidence, Jack Leonard was nearby in a LA Times vehicle and heard a 'shots fired!, possible Dragnet reporter!' radio call on his police scanner and came to Friday's rescue. Leonard fired several questions at the Trutanich gang who quickly dispersed. Both Friday and Leonard agreed that it wasn't necessary to report the shooting to LAPD, and strangely, LAPD did not have any record of the radio call. Also, within minutes, both Friday and Leonard had 'hazy' recollections of the incident, but swore that in about 30 years time, their memories would improve. You people buying this shit? Probably not.

Give Big Tuna a break this happened 3Oy ago. For god sake there was some much gang related murders back in a day that hearing couple pops going off in anybodys vicinity would make them paranoid of being a target even if the bullets have been fired at somebody else...maybe at witness that Nuch was talking to trying to resolve the murder case. Something happened for sure....there is no way this is all a fiction. Big Tuna was there and shots were fired....at who we don't know. Jim Bell says its was at Nuch. He was there with him. He put so many of the ganbangers away that I wouldn't be surprised if there was more drive by shootouts..........u got to have balls to prosecute gangs and interview witneses in the hood. That's what Nuch does....that's what real leaders in law enforcement do....that's what keep our streets safe. Its because of prosecutors like Nuch and our brave special gang units and their effort is why the streets r safer and murder rate is at lowest rate in 60 years. That's the truth
