LA Weekly - What went wrong with the front-runner?

LA Weekly reporter Gene Maddaus was at 'ground zero' last Tuesday night. The night the roller-coaster merry go round ride that has been Carmen the Clown's meteoric rise came crashing to the ground in a humiliating defeat that left the audience stunned, and Trutanich facing ruin and political oblivion.

In this week's LA Weekly, Maddaus takes a look at some of the reasons why the front-runner got his ass handed to him on a plate. Although most agree that Trutanich was largely responsible for his own downfall, Maddaus adds some insight.

I don't think people realize how devastated Nuch was when the first results came out. He had a carefully prepared victory speech written by Shallman, it was basically a repeat of the speech he gave in July 2009 when he spoke for over an hour on the steps of city hall. He was going to be so appreciative of Sheriff Baca and Gov. Brown's support, and really gracious to Cooley, Lacey, Jackson and all the other DA candidates. He was going to announce his transition team with Jane Usher and Bill Carter who would set things up for his take over. That is how confident Nuch was that he had won. Nuch was actually physically sick when he saw the results. He called Shallman to see if there was a mistake, but there was none, and then it got very nasty. Now, a week later and Nuch is like a zombie. He still cannot believe he missed the cut.

What really shocked me was to see how the Trutanich trolls took over the comment section of the LA Weekly and used it to attack Berger/Joe Friday/Dragnet. The truly loathsome atmosphere in the Trutanich camp has clearly raised it's head.

The election is over guys, all you're doing now is proving right everyone who has ever accused Nuch of vindictiveness. Grow up! No one likes sore losers!

It's not a case of sore losers, Nuch has been robbed. He should have been the winner. There needs to be a full investigation into what went wrong, because it looks like Shalman deliberately set Nuch up for failure. It was Shallman's idea that Nuch would stay off the radar for the last two weeks, and that was insane.

Then, when Berger called Nuch a douchebag liar and conman on FOX 11News, Nuch stayed underground and instead of denying, he more or less accepted that he had lied by sending Shallman to speak on his behalf. Did you see Shallman on FOX? OMG, what a lying sack. He made Nuch look so guilty.

I really think the democratic process has been undermined. Shallman is up to something, it is almost as if he doesn't want Nuch to win. Maybe he's getting more money from Mike Feuer .

2:17 pm, nearly 80 percent of the voters voted for someone OTHER than Trutanich. He should not have been the winner. He has been an abject failure as City Attorney and he is entirely unfit to lead the DA's Office.

It is SO like Trutanich to blame everyone else except himself. Look, I don't know which aspects of Nuch's failed campaign were his idea, and which were Shallman's. For the record, I think they are both complete a**holes. But no one, not even Shallman, forced Nuch to do or not do anything, so knock it off with your pathetic conspiracy ideas. You people need to grow a pair and place the responsibility for his defeat where it belongs -- with Trutanich.

I saw Trutanich at a cigar night last night. He was like a broken man. It is obvious to me that he is very different from a couple of weeks ago. The swagger, the bravado, the confidence, it's all gone. He's like a small kid at Disneyland who can't find his parents but doesn't want anyone to see that he's about to lose his shit and start bawling his eyes out. I blame Shallman entirely for screwing Trutanich's campaign so badly, but I also blame Trutanich for listening to Shallman.

What went wrong? Easy. Too many people knew what a lying sack piece of crap Trutanich was.

Google 'The Downfall of Carmen Trutanich' to find the YouTube video that explains it all, if you really want to know what went wrong.

Please join Sheriff Lee Baca and Councilman Dennis Zine at the Havana Room cigar club in Beverly Hills 7pm Wednesday night for a fundraiser to help District Attorney candidate Carmen 'Nouch' Trutanich retire his campaign debt. Carmen ran a brave campaign that deserved to to better than it did, and now he needs you to help with the cost.

Those making a maximum contribution of $1,500 will receive an autographed commemorative t shirt and yard sign.

I heard that Trutanich lost so badly that he won't be able to run for city attorney. He spent $1.8M on his campaign and got 22% of the vote. Alan Jackson spent only $524k and got 24%. If Alan doesn't win DA in November, he would make a really good City Attorney. He would win easy. I think we should start a website called Draft Alan Jackson for City Attorney and show the awesome level of grassroots support that exists for AJ. It would also be a nice way of keeping Trutanich out of LA politics permanently. He really did a lousy job with all that money and the endorsements too. If Jackie or AJ had the same money and endorsements as Trutanich, they would have won by a huge margin. It just shows how much Trutanich's political capital has fallen. People do not like liars.

Please remove this comment. It is inappropriate and feeds into Anti-Semetic stereotypes. It is an inappropriate comment and definitely should be removed. As a Jew, I find it offense to suggest or even imply some sort of Jewish conspiracy. Let's keep things straight here - no Jews were running in the election.

really......if anything it was a compliment to all Jewish people. If there was anything racist it was the Downfall video although pretty hilarious.
